NZ workers ‘too pessimistic’ about job market

New Zealand workers are too pessimistic about the outlook for the job market, a business leader says. The latest quarterly Westpac McDermott Miller Employment Index shows employment confidence has hit its lowest level in over two years. The index fell 4.6 points in the December quarter, from 104.2 to 99.6. This is its lowest level since June 2009 when it stood at 96.1. Online job vacancies continue to rise

The number of job vacancies advertised online continued to grow in June, according to the latest Jobs Online index. Overall, online vacancies increased by 2.3% in June 2011, compared to May 2011, and skilled vacancies went up by 1.5%. “This shows that employment prospects are continuing to improve,” says the Department of Labour’s Head of Research and Analysis, Vasantha Krishnan. “This is supportive of other indicators that point to a gradual increase in economic activity.
