Employment Court says Text message dismissal unjustified

The Employment Court at Nelson has upheld an Employment Relations Authority decision finding a salad bar worker was unjustifiably dismissed when she was sacked by text message after being accused of stealing on her second day on the job. Chief Employment Court Judge Graeme Colgan upheld the ERA decision awarded Amberleigh Howe-Thornley more than $6000 in compensation. Bus driver fired for taking photos of children wins compensation

A school bus driver fired after taking photos of the primary pupils on his route has won more than $14,500 from the employer who sacked him. John Grant was fired from his job as a Hebberds Bus Services driver for Riwaka School, about 5km north of Motueka near Nelson last September. IRD confirms job cuts in regional offices

Inland Revenue has confirmed it's cutting 156 jobs from its regional offices. The affected branches are Rotorua, New Plymouth, Napier, Nelson and Invercargill. Deputy Commissioner Carolyn Tremain said the original proposal was for 191 job losses, but after consultation with staff the number has been reduced to 156. She said IRD will keep its offices, but where and how it does some work would change. The process is expected to take 18 months, and will start early next year.

IRD to axe 200 jobs

The tax vampires are having an in-house clean out.The Inland Revenue Department is set to axe 200 jobs in regional offices. Details of the plan are being released to staff today. The Taranaki Daily News reports that IRD branches in Rotorua, New Plymouth, Nelson and Invercargill are going to have staff numbers halved in less than a year.
